Important travel information

What to pack

Vaccinations & Medical

Vaccinations & Medical

The weather in Nairobi is usually sunny and warm in the day but it can often rain and the evenings can be a bit chilly, therefore we advise you to pack summer clothes and always carry a light jacket or jumper.

The weather on the coast can get very warm and humid - so pack light summer clothes and swimwear.

And if you go on Safari you will be up and out at dawn when the weather is crisp and cold so make sure to pack warmer clothes and layers so you can remove them later in the day as the sun rises! If you're going on Safari you will also want to pack boots or good trainers and a sun hat.

...and on the subject of sun, don't forget sun screen!

A couple of other essentials: mosquito repellent and plug adaptors (UK type),

Vaccinations & Medical

Vaccinations & Medical

Vaccinations & Medical

You will need to get your Yellow Fever vaccinations and carry the certificate with you when entering into Nairobi as you may be asked to present it at immigration.

It's a good idea to check which other vaccines you may need with your doctor or travel clinic before flying to Kenya. Different countries/ doctors may advise differently depending on your medical history and any vaccines you have already had.

In case of any medical emergencies we recommend using the following clinics:

  • M.P Shah Hospital at Village Market Mall
  • The Nairobi Hospital
  • The Agakhan Hospital in Parklands

Flights & Visas

Airport transport

Please check if you need to apply for a full Kenya visa before traveling.

For most nationalities, you can apply for an electronic travel autorization (eTA). Please make sure to use the official government website to apply and not a third party.

LINK to apply here: https://etakenya.go.ke/

eTA's usually take 24/ 48 hours to come through but can take longer so apply in advance!

If you're coming from London we recommend taking the direct British Airways flight from Heathrow, departing every day at 9am.

If you're coming from Copenhagen there isn't a direct flight but we recommend the Qatar Airways option, departing at 2pm via Doha.

Airport transport

Airport transport

We recommend using Uber in Nairobi - it's quick and efficient and available at the airport. Alternatively, if you're staying at a hotel you may be able to organise an airport shuttle service.

If you get stuck or want to book an Uber in advance you can use one of the following trusted Uber drivers who often take us to and from the airport:

You can contact them using the numbers above on WhatsApp. Make sure to give them one of our names when booking!

Money

The Kenyan currency is Kenyan Shillings (KES). It's probably a good idea to have some cash with you when you arrive but don't carry toooo much. There are ATM's readily available that accept visa and mastercard and you can also pay for things on card in most places.

Sim cards

If your phone carrier doesn't allow for international roaming or if you feel it will be expensive, a cheap and efficient option we recommend is purchasing an E-Sim from Airlo (if your phone takes them) as you need a Kenyan ID to purchase a sim card in country.

Where to Stay

We recommend staying in either Westlands or Kilimani. Here are a few AirBnB options:

  • https://www.airbnb.com/slink/ZaU5HYL7
  • https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/844807760968024542?source_impression_id=p3_1733326013_P3sI85EHbmySlchF

If you are a large group that wants to stay together in one big house or in apartments in the same building, let us know and we will put you in touch with someone who can organise that for you.

Where to Eat

A few of our favourite places to eat are:

  • Wine Shop - for (surprise surprise) good wine! Check out the pizzas.
  • Ankole - for African inspired food from across the continent.
  • Crafty Chameleon - for a relaxed atmosphere and garden setting
  • Nairobi Street Kitchen - for good smash burgers, pizza and beer (and a hair cut for the boys)
  • Kalamata - has a great courtyard with a fire pit and nice food
  • Geco - fun evening vibes. Get the Brazilian steak with your shots!
  • Sarit Mall Rooftop food court - we know it's a mall but trust us. Try the Indian food and the IPA. Also the best Mexican in town! A great pit stop if you need to do some last minute shopping or get a manicure.

Where to Drink

You can get drinks at all of the places above but if you're looking for something a little extra (and maybe want to see the sunrise!), we recommend the following places:

  • Milan
  • Alloy
  • Havanna

What to Do

There are so many amazing things to get up to in Nairobi but some of the highlights include:

  • Nairobi National Park - great for a Safari taster, although a Safari out of town will offer you a more unforgettable experience!
  • Nairobi Elephant Orphanage - a magical place where you can feed the baby elephants.  https://www.sheldrickwildlifetrust.org, https://maps.app.goo.gl/rpa943m63EGYYpn7A?g_st=ic (Make sure to buy tickets in advance!)
  • Giraffe Center -  https://www.giraffecentre.org/ (Make sure to buy tickets in advance!)
  • Karen Farmers Market - for Kenyan arts, crafts and food. Also great for a few afternoon beers post shopping. (only on Saturday's)
  • Karura Forest - a beautiful place for a walk, and to escape the hustle and bustle of the city (there's also a lovely restaurant among the trees!)

The Beach - Diani/ Watamu/ Lamu

How to Get There

It is best to take a short internal flight to get to the beach. There are several airlines that run these flights daily from Nairobi, including Kenyan Airways Jambo Jet and Fly 540.

Where to Stay

You can use Booking.com and AirBnB for great beachside options.  Feel free to send us your ideas and we can check them out and give you our advice!

Things To Do

Snorkeling. Diving. Jet ski's. Massage. .. you won't be bored at the beach in Kenya!

Best Safari destinations (in our opinion!)

There are so many beautiful places to go on Safari in Kenya but these are our faves:

Amboseli

With views of Kilimanjaro and hundreds of elephants migrating across the planes each day, Amboseli won't disappoint!

We love to stay at Olemayan Cottages, where you sleep in wooden huts on stilts, eat home cooked food and sit by a fire pit in the evenings. Levi will pack you a breakfast for your early morning drives and greet you with a big smile upon your return! There is also space to put up a tent if you want to get even more down with nature.

If you're after a bit more comfort, we recommend staying at this Safari Lodge: https://share.google/nzzNi8Zs8Kk2JXVdA

It takes about 5 hours to drive to Amboseli from Nairobi.

Masai Mara

Everyone's favourite, the Mara is known for the Wilderbeast migration (as seen in the Lion King) which happens between July and September. Fun fact... the Wilderbeast migration is one of the 7 wonders of the world.

Nyeri

Nyeri is a great place to go for smaller, privately owned conservancies where you can really get up close to the Rhinos.

Drive back to Nairobi through the Aberdares - a mountain range which is a also a Safari park. Especially great if you like a waterfall or two!

Stay at Rhino Watch in Nyeri - you can book a glamping tent and enjoy the pool and the views after you get back from Safari!

Naivasha

Naivasha doesn't have a national park and isn't technically a place to go on Safari BUT it's just a couple of hours drive from Nairobi and has a lot to offer.

You can visit Sirocco Wildlife Sanctuary to get up close to animals, take a boat ride on the lake to spot hippos, and see the flamingoes in Nakuru.

There are some great places to stay, including a campasite on the lake where you can get super close to the hippos, but our fave AirBnB is this one: https://www.airbnb.co.uk/rooms/717297953426253369?viralityEntryPoint=1&s=76

And if you're a larger group: https://www.airbnb.co.uk/rooms/32580167?viralityEntryPoint=1&s=76
